1987-03-07 Thomas Hearns w rsc 10 (12) Dennis Andries, Cobo Hall, Detroit, Michigan, USA - WBC. Referee: Isaac Herrera. Boxing with the left jab consistently picking up points, the challenger took no risks against the hefty swings of Andries (173½), especially after being cut over the left eye in the second round. The fight only came to life in the sixth when Andries was sent crashing from a right over the top and even though he was dropped twice more and slipped over a couple of times he still managed to make it to the end of the session. The seventh saw Andries have his best round, but by the eighth Hearns (173¼) was back in control and in the ninth he had the champion over again. Clearly this could not continue for much longer and after Andries had been dropped again and then got up somewhat disorientated the referee stepped in to rescue him at 1.26 of the tenth. Andries had shown tremendous courage to keep going as long as he did and in the end it was more fatigue than Hearns’ punches that finished him. Hearns relinquished the WBC version of the title in August to challenge for the vacant WBC middleweight crown.
