1987-06-07 [[Vinny Pazienza]] w pts 15 [[Greg Haugen]], Civic Centre, Providence, Rhode Island, USA - IBF. Referee: Wally Smith. Scorecards: 144-141, 144-141, 144-141. With both men giving it everything it was a pity there had to be a loser. It was certainly a tough one, with the champion showing boxing skills he was not thought to have possessed and punching harder, while Pazienza (134½) just kept coming on through the pain to throw a greater volume of punches than his opponent. Although it was anybody’s fight after nine rounds, while Haugen (134¼) seemed to be pacing himself for a big finish Pazienza continued working to win the next three sessions. Coming back with a bang in the 13th Haugen hurt Pazienza, but despite being cut over the left eye the latter blazed away in the next two rounds to land the title.
