1987-06-07 [[Vinny Pazienza]] w pts 15 [[Greg Haugen]], Civic Centre, Providence, Rhode Island, USA - IBF. Referee: Wally Smith. Scorecards: 144-141, 144-141, 144-141. With both men giving it everything it was a pity there had to be a loser. It was certainly a tough one, with the champion showing boxing skills he wasn’t thought to have possessed and punching harder, while Pazienza (134½) just kept coming on through the pain to throw a greater volume of punches than his opponent. Although it was anybody’s fight after nine rounds, while Haugen (134¼) seemed to be pacing himself for a big finish Pazienza continued working to win the next three rounds. Coming back with a bang in the 13th Haugen hurt Pazienza, but the latter wouldn’t be denied, despite being cut over the left eye, and blazed away in the next two sessions to land the title.
