1987-07-04 Juan Martin Coggi w co 3 (15) Patrizio Oliva, Sports Palace, Ribera, Italy - WBA. Referee: Bernie Soto. Boxing well from long range the champion went through the opening two rounds relatively in control, although Coggi (138¾) occasionally showed up with solid left hooks from his southpaw stance. In the third Coggi moved up a gear, and after biding his time he unleashed a big left hook to the jaw which dropped Oliva (139¾) heavily. While Oliva made it to his feet in time he was all at sea. Looking for the finish, Coggi soon got through again with another heavy left hook, but this time the Italian was counted out at 2.41 of the session.

At their convention held in October, the WBA announced that in future all world title bouts held under their banner would be contested over 12 rounds.
