1987-08-15 Fidel Bassa drew 15 Hilario Zapata, New City Gym, Panama City, Panama - WBA. Referee: Ismael Fernandez. Scorecards: 143-141, 139-147, 143-143. Having been floored in the first by the local hero, Bassa (111½) got himself up and despite swinging wildly and running on to southpaw counters at times he landed the better punches. It was close and when the challenging Zapata (111½) failed to get the decision the crowd went mad in what was one of the worse riots for years. This would be the last 15-round world title fight within the weight class for the WBC after they decided in October that in future all world title bouts under their auspices would be contested over 12 rounds.
