1987-08-21 Julio Cesar Chavez w pts 12 Danilo Cabrera, Caliente Racetrack, Tijuana, Mexico - WBC. Referee: James Jen-Kin. Scorecards: 120-102, 120-105, 120-102. Having floored the challenger with a right for the mandatory ‘eight’ in the first round, Chavez (129) might have been excused for thinking that he was in for an early night. However, as much as he tried he could not remove the spirited Cabrera (129), who was hit with every punch in the book but was still standing at the final bell.

Chavez relinquished the WBC version of the title after becoming the WBA lightweight champion on 21 November and shortly afterwards Azumah Nelson and Mario Martinez were matched to find a new champion.
