1987-08-29 Azumah Nelson w pts 12 Marcos Villasana, Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California, USA - WBC. Referee: John Thomas. Scorecards: 118-108, 117-110, 117-111. Following his first defence against Villasana (126) this win was far more comprehensive, the latter being reduced to blatantly punching below the belt, for which he was deducted two points. At one stage he even dropped Nelson with a blow lower than the protector. Although Nelson (125½) was in control almost throughout it did not stop him from occasionally dropping off the pace, but when he did his defence was always too good for Villasana, who finished with badly battered features.

When Nelson relinquished the WBC version of the title in January 1988 in order to contest the vacant junior lightweight crown Jeff Fenech and Victor Callejas were matched to find a new champion.
