1987-10-10 Frank Tate w pts 15 Michael Olajide, Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - IBF. Referee: Richard Steele. Scorecards: 146-135, 148-134, 147-136. Contesting the vacant title, the opening three rounds saw Olajide (157½) taking the fight to Tate (160) before the latter came back with better quality punches from head to body. Olajide, the son of Ola Michael, a top-class lightweight who fought in British rings in the 1950s and ‘60s, began to give ground from the fifth onwards as Tate stepped it up. By the seventh the fight was in Tate’s hands, and after staggering Olajide in the ninth with a left hook the latter was dropped by a big right in the tenth. Having got up and stayed out of trouble, Olajide went down again in the 12th. Although Olajide made it to his feet and came back fighting, knowing he had the contest in the bag Tate was happy to box his way through to the final bell.
