1987-10-16 Jeff Fenech w tdec 4 (12) Carlos Zarate, Hordern Pavilion, Sydney, Australia - WBC. Referee: Henry Elesperu. Scorecards: 40-34, 40-34, 40-34. Although winning the first three rounds, Fenech (122) did not have it all his own way and the hard-hitting challenger often matched him as both scored with heavy body shots. At this stage, one sensed that the fight would not last too long. In the fourth the pair went toe-to-toe and a right to the jaw decked Zarate (122) for the mandatory ‘eight’. On the resumption, the referee warned Zarate for ‘use of the head’ and immediately prior to the bell a deep gash appeared on Fenech’s cheekbone. It looked to be extremely nasty and during the interval, with the latter deemed unable to continue, the referee went to the scorecards.

Fenech relinquished the WBC version of the championship in January 1988 to challenge for the WBC featherweight crown, an action that was followed by Zarate and Daniel Zaragoza being matched to find a new champion.
