1987-10-23 Sumbu Kalambay w pts 15 Iran Barkley, Sports Palace, Livorno, Italy - WBA. Referee: Ismael Rodriguez. Scorecards: 147-140, 147-140, 147-142. Boxing an intelligent fight, Kalambay (160) picked up the vacant WBA title when outscoring Barkley (159) in a one-sided contest. It was Kalambay’s excellent use of the left jab, allied to solid counters, along with general cleverness that kept Barkley at bay and although the American could never really influence the fight he never stopped trying. There were no knockdowns, but Barkley was rocked on occasion and finished the fight with his left eye swollen. At their conference, held during October, the WBA stated that all world title fights held under their banner would be contested over 12 rounds in future, thus bringing them into line with the WBC.
