1988-02-27 Bernardo Pinango w pts 12 Julio Gervacio, Roberto Clemente Stadium, San Juan, Puerto Rico - WBA. Referee: Rudy Battle. Scorecards: 115-114, 114-113, 114-114. Although Gervacio (122), sporting left jabs, left hooks and short uppercuts, was the constant aggressor while his challenger was content to counter, the fight appeared in the balance until round 11. Following an alleged butt, Gervacio was badly cut over the right eye, an injury that was followed by Pinango (122) raising his game to batter the Venezuelan around the ring and drop him in the 12th. In the aftermath there was uproar when the post-fight drug test revealed traces of cocaine in Pinango’s system, but despite that Pinango was given clearance to defend the title against Juan Jose Estrada in Mexico.
