1988-02-29 Azumah Nelson w pts 12 Mario Martinez, Inglewood Forum, Los Angeles, California, USA - WBC. Referee: Rudy Jordan. Scorecards: 115-113, 115-113, 113-114. Fighting to decide the WBC version of the championship after Julio Cesar Chavez abdicated, the former WBC featherweight champion, Nelson (130), was matched against Martinez (129½). With Nelson content to keep at distance and the Mexican unable to work out the best way of handling him it became a tactical affair with the former just doing enough to stay in front. Having suffered a swelling under his left eye in the ninth, the hard-punching Martinez decided to go for it in the tenth and nailed Nelson with a right-left hook that dumped him for ‘four’. Back on his feet Nelson blazed away with wild punches to take the play away from Martinez and although the latter hurt him again he lost his chance of winning by doing too little over the last couple of sessions.
