1988-03-05 Sumbu Kalambay w pts 12 Mike McCallum, Sports Palace, Pesaro, Italy - WBA. Referee: John Coyle. Scorecards: 116-115, 115-114, 118-114. In what was a huge upset, Kalambay (159) retained his title against the odds-on favourite McCallum (158¾), who had been expected to win inside the distance. Although McCallum constantly stalked Kalambay there were no knockdowns, the latter giving a great display of defensive boxing while making his rival miss and picking up points with left jabs and counters. Even when McCallum landed Kalambay was able to manoeuvre himself out of harm’s way, and it was he who landed the more significant punches, a big right clearly rocking the Jamaican in the tenth. The last two sessions saw McCallum trying desperately to find the punch to turn things his way, but Kalambay was happy to coast to the final bell without taking any further risks.
