1988-03-12 Jose Luis Ramirez w pts 12 Pernell Whitaker, Circus Tent, Levallois-Perret, Paris, France - WBC. Referee: Carlos Guzman. Scorecards: 116-115, 118-113, 113-117. Making a good start, the challenger appeared to dominate the early rounds with his excellent right jab finding Ramirez (135), while his smooth footwork allowed him to stay out of trouble. In a match between southpaws, Ramirez, who was always coming forward, only started to get to Whitaker (134¾) in the middle rounds after the latter had broken his left hand in the fourth. Although Whitaker was forced to get on his bike as Ramirez picked up the pace, he began to make the champion miss more from the ninth onwards, nicking points with the counters through to the end of the contest. On the result, Whitaker dropped to his knees in disbelief. In the aftermath, Whitaker's manager stormed that Ramirez might have been throwing more punches than his man but had failed to land the majority of them.
