1988-05-07 Juan Martin Coggi w co 2 (12) Sang-Ho Lee, San Parignano Tented Arena, Roseto Degli Abruzzi, Italy - WBA. Referee: Carlos Berrocal. Having been booed by the crowd for showing a distinct lack of action in the first round, the southpaw champion walked out for the second determined to make the first defence of his title a memorable one. With that in mind the fans were soon silenced. After stunning Lee (139¼) with a solid right hook, Coggi (138¾) unleashed a battery of blows to head and body which ultimately saw the South Korean sink to the floor to be counted out on the 1.35 mark.

In October 1988, during the WBA convention held in Venezuela, 27 of the 71 delegates walked out in disgust and went on to form the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) a few weeks later. From that moment, the new organisation failed to recognise Coggi and went on to nominate Hector Camacho and Ray Mancini to contest the vacant title.
