1988-06-10 Charles Williams w rtd 11 (15) Richard Caramanolis, Sports Park, Annecy, France - IBF. Referee: Randy Neumann. Defending the title for the first time, Williams (172½) was quick off the mark when flooring Caramanolis (174½) towards the end of the opening round, only for the latter to come back hard with straight rights in the next four sessions. By the fifth, however, Caramanolis was beginning to be worn down as Williams countered with solid rights of his own and was badly cut down the left side of his nose. In the ninth Williams’ left eye began to swell and stepping up the pace he worked from head to body as Caramanolis sagged. After being floored twice in the 11th, Caramanolis was retired by his corner following the second knockdown.
From thereon, all world title bouts would be contested over 12 rounds after the IBF announced that they were falling into line with the WBA and WBC from 1 September.
