1988-06-27 Mike Tyson w co 1 Michael Spinks, Convention Centre, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - WORLD. Referee: Frank Cappuccino. Prior to the fight the unbeaten Spinks (212¼) had been seen by many as the man to stop the champion’s incessant march, but he too ultimately went the way of all the others. Right from the start Spinks was under pressure as Tyson (218¼) tore into him, lashing in lefts and rights, and a left uppercut soon had the challenger over. Although Spinks made it to his feet at ‘two’ before taking the rest of the mandatory count, after trying to fight back a big left uppercut to the jaw followed by a right to the body sent him down to be counted out flat on his back at 1.31 of the session. Despite being contested over 12 rounds, it was recognised by the IBF as a world title bout.
During the summer of 1988, at their convention, the IBF announced that as from 1 September all world title bouts held under their banner would be contested over 12 rounds, thus bringing them into line with the WBC and the WBA.
Following the setting up of the World Boxing Organisation (WBO), which came about after 27 delegates walked out of the WBA convention in October, in their wisdom the new organisation decided to support the winner of the Francesco Damiani v Johnny Du Plooy bout as their first heavyweight champion rather than recognising Tyson.
