1988-07-28 Michael Nunn w rsc 9 (15) Frank Tate, Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - IBF. Referee: Mills Lane. Dictating the fight from the outset, the southpaw Nunn (160) showed all the qualities of an old timer as he won virtually every round before finishing the champion off. Although Tate (160) occasionally got through Nunn’s defences he was generally given a lesson as the latter picked up the pace, with cracking combinations, as the fight wore on. Nunn also showed excellent defensive skills. At the end of the eighth, Tate was dropped by a left uppercut to the body and while the bell came to his aid he was soon under pressure in the ninth as Nunn stormed into him. Nunn was not going to let his man off the hook this time and having hammered Tate on to the ropes and battering away at him the referee had a good look before calling it off after 40 seconds. Following this, the IBF announced that, as at 1 September, all world title bouts held under their auspices would be contested over 12 rounds and this would be the last 15-round fight for the weight class.
