1988-08-01 Miguel Lora w pts 12 Alberto Davila, Inglewood Forum, Los Angeles, California, USA - WBC. Referee: John Thomas. Scorecards: 118-113, 117-111, 117-111. After deciding to outscore the challenger from the outside, Lora (118) changed his mind in the third round and began to work on the inside where he stayed throught the remainder of the contest. Taking a great deal of punishment, the brave Davila (118) never gave up despite being cut over both eyes. In the ninth, a white towel was thrown into the ring and thinking Davila’s corner were pulling their man out the contest was halted, only to find that it was a fan who had confused the referee. With the culprit apprehended the fight continued, but after the final bell when it was discovered that Lora’s ringside water bottle had traces of amphetamines in it, there were fears that the champion would be stripped of his title before a second test showed up nothing and his explanation of taking medicine for a cold some 25 days earlier was accepted.
