With the flashy skills of the champion against the heavier-hitting Paez (125¾) on display it was an intriguing contest which lived up to its billing. As Grove (125) picked up points early on with rapid-fire punching, it was tight going into the final session and Paez clinched it when he knocked his rival down three times to finish the stronger. After the IBF fell into line with the WBA and WBC, from 1 September all world title bouts for the weight class in the future would be contested over 12 rounds.
