1988-10-14 Simon Brown w pts 12 Mauro Martelli, Malley Skating Rink, Lausanne, Switzerland - IBF. Referee: Steve Smoger. Scorecards: 115-113, 120-108, 120-108. Defending his title for the second time, Brown (147) was nearly always going better than Martelli (146¼), who made a poor start when being frequently pounded on the ropes in the early rounds and being hurt by solid right uppercuts. Although the European champion overcame his initial problems and gradually began to get into the contest from the fifth onwards he was never able to cut back Brown’s lead. While Brown won convincingly and destroyed Martelli’s unbeaten record in doing so, despite the latter showing good technique and boxing quite cleverly at times the European judge strangely had him just two points down at the finish.
