1988-10-15 Juan Jose Estrada w rsc 11 Takuya Muguruma, Municipal Gym, Moriguchi, Japan - WBA. Referee: Roberto Ramirez. Starting the bout on the offensive, using sharp left leads and heavy one-twos, Estrada (122) got to the tough Muguruma (122) in the fourth, dropping him with a well-timed right hand. The challenger came back strongly when forcing Estrada to work on the outside more, but beginning to be outboxed he became more and more frustrated. Despite a clash of heads opening a cut on Estrada’s left eye in the tenth, a terrific right cross sent Muguruma down and lucky to get up in the 11th. Then, with the champion raining in punch after punch, the towel was tossed in by Muguruma’s corner on the 2.07 mark to save their man from taking further punishment.

Following the formation of the World Boxing Organisation (WBO), which came about after 26 angry delegates walked out of the WBA convention, the new organisation nominated Kenny Mitchell to meet Julio Gervacio for their version of the title.
