1988-10-27 Tony Lopez w pts 12 John John Molina, Arco Arena, Sacramento, California, USA - IBF. Referee: Hank Elespuro. Scorecards: 114-113, 114-113, 115-111. Knocked down in the second round by a solid left hook to the head and hurt again in the fifth, Lopez (129¾) had to call on all his reserves to stay in the fight against a challenger who had piled up the points with lancing left leads and was ahead at the halfway stage. Not only a stylish boxer, Molina (129½) could also punch and was dangerous with either hand. Surprisingly, for whatever reason, Molina allowed Lopez to take control from the seventh onwards, being happy to make a difficult target, before he came back in the last session with another left hook to shake the champion up. Unfortunately for him it didn’t sway the judges, but it was close.
