1988-12-08 John David Jackson w rtd 7 Lupe Aquino, Cobo Arena, Detroit, Michigan, USA - WBO. Jackson (153) became the WBO’s first champion at the weight when forcing Aquino (154), who was arrested immediately after the fight on vehicular manslaughter charges, to retire on his stool at the end of the seventh. Afterwards, Aquino said his thoughts had been elsewhere, which probably summed up why he was never in the contest against his sharp-punching southpaw opponent who seemed to be able to hit him at will at times. Put down by a left hand in the first round, Aquino, cut on the bridge of the nose in the fourth, was badly outboxed from there onwards as Jackson banged away with both hands. Thus, it came as no surprise when Aquino's corner pulled him out of the fight.
