1989-01-21 [[Meldrick Taylor]] w rsc 7 [[John Meekins]], Trump Plaza Hotel, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - IBF. Referee: Steve Smoger. Despite being outscored from the start, winning only the third round, the hard-punching Meekins (138) remained competitive right up to being pulled out of the contest by the referee at the end of the seventh when suffering a badly swollen right eye. Meekins tried hard enough, but the champion’s blinding hand speed made it almost impossible for him to contend with. Firing off jabs and an assortment of other blows to head and body at high speed, whilst also showing up to be an excellent defensive fighter, Taylor (139¾) looked a cut above the rest of the division. Even when he was cut over the left eye in the third Taylor remained unfazed, while the claim that he could not punch his weight was a falacy as Meekins would testify afterwards.
