1989-02-03 Israel Contreras w co 1 Maurizio Lupino, The Polyhedron, Caracas, Venezuela - WBO. Coming into the fight with a record of 30 wins in 32 fights, Contreras became the WBO’s first ever champion at the weight when he knocked out Lupino inside 37 seconds, the quickest win in world title history at this point. Afterwards the WBO came in for much criticism when it emerged that the Italian had only won 12 fights out of a possible 29 and had been clearly outscored in a crack at the European title in 1987.
