1989-02-05 [[Darrin Van Horn]] w pts 12 [[Robert Hines]], Trump Castle Hotel, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - IBF. Referee: Randy Neumann. Scorecards: 118-110, 118-111, 116-112. Looking slow and lethargic, Hines (153) lost his title at the first time of asking when being outboxed by the 20-year-old Van Horn (153¼), who mixed up slugging with boxing effectively on the outside to take the opening five rounds. The unbeaten Van Horn continued in that vein during most of the remaining sessions as the southpaw champion desperately tried to get going, and even when the youngster was caught napping he always came back firing fiercely. Although Hines was not dropped he was caught time and again by right hands, and at the finish, apart from being a big loser on the cards, he was left bleeding heavily from the nose and lumpy around both eyes.
