1989-02-25 Azumah Nelson w rsc 12 Mario Martinez, Hilton Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBC. Referee: Carlos Padilla. Close for the first eight rounds as Martinez (129) scored well with jabs and hooks, the champion began to get the range in the ninth, resulting in him hurting the Mexican with a big left hook. Although Martinez, his left eye now badly swollen, fought back for the remainder of the session there was no holding Nelson (129) and after he coasted through the tenth he looked for a finish in the 11th. Somehow Martinez made it through the round despite being a spent force and Nelson’s first punch in the 12th, a left hook, dropped him for the regulatory ‘eight’ count. Given the go ahead, Martinez tore into Nelson with a do-or-die assault, but it was futile and was met by a tremendous burst of head punches which left him defenceless and saw the referee come to his rescue at 1.18 of the round.
