Badly cut on the temple in the third round, Phelps (115) gamely fought on, setting up attack after attack, but lacked the power to damage Pical (115), who soon built up a solid lead with quick counters. There were no knockdowns, but plenty of close-range hitting to excite the fans and due to the challenger’s toughness Pical’s much vaunted left failed to make a dent.
