1989-03-03 [[Elvis Alvarez]] w pts 12 [[Miguel Mercedes]], Ivan Bedout Basketball Theatre, Medellin, Colombia - WBO. Scorecards: 119-111, 120-113, 119-110. Fighting to become the WBO’s first champion at the weight, Alvarez showed excellent southpaw skills, allied to solid punching, to outbox Mercedes in the majority of rounds. This was something of an upset as Mercedes had been favoured to win by the short route, but as hard as he tried he could not find the punches to end the contest summarily. A fairly sketchy report made no mention of any knockdowns.
