1989-03-10 Fabrice Benichou w pts 12 Jose Sanabria, Beaublanc Sports Palace, Limoges, France - IBF. Referee: Harry Papacaralambolous. Scorecards: 119-112, 116-113, 114-116. Making a good start, Benichou (121½), landing plenty of solid lefts, got himself in front of the champion before being badly hurt in rounds five and seven. By the ninth, however, Benichou found his second wind, outjabbing Sanabria (121¾) and hurting him with some good right hands. Then, on realising his title was slipping away Sanabria came on strong in the 12th to drive his rival around the ring prior to dropping him. Although Benichou was exhausted, he made it to the final bell to become the new champion.
