1989-04-08 Jeff Fenech w pts 12 Marcos Villasana, National Tennis Centre, Melbourne, Australia - WBC. Referee: Joe Cortez. Scorecards: 117-109, 118-109, 118-109. In an exciting but lopsided fight on the scoring element, Fenech (125½) held on to his title despite having broken his left hand in three places and damaging his right mitt also. As always, tough and stubborn, Villasana (125½), swollen around both eyes at the finish, made a good showing as he consistently threw hard punches, but it was Fenech, throwing two for one and always marching forward, who was a clear winner.
Immediately after the fight, Fenech announced that he would be retiring, naming hand injuries as the reason. However, the announcement was merely a ploy to take time out while promotional problems were sorted and he eventually came back on 24 November at the National Tennis Centre to win a 12-round points decision over Mario Martinez in a non-title bout, but again damaged his hands. In February it was reported that Fenech would almost certainly relinquish the title and Villasana, who had failed a Californian medical, would be meeting Chan-Mok Park to decide a new WBC champion, with the winner defending against Paul Hodkinson. Eventually, Fenech vacated the title in April to move up to super-feather and Villasana was cleared to fight for the vacant crown against Hodkinson, Park having decided to challenge for the WBA version of the championship instead.
