1989-04-18 Doug DeWitt w pts 12 Robbie Sims, Showboat Hotel, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - WBO. Referee: Joe Cortez. Scorecards: 116-112, 115-113, 113-115. In a contest to decide the inaugural WBO title, two men who were supposed to be finished after being defeated by Sumbu Kalambay in their last fights were matched. Most of the solid blows in the fight were delivered by DeWitt (160), while the southpaw Sims (159), always throwing punches, was as game as ever and was even ahead after five rounds despite being hurt in that session. The contest turned in the sixth as DeWitt got some heavy shots off and in the seventh he almost had Sims over from a left hook. This was followed by DeWitt being badly hurt in the eighth and cut over the left eye in the ninth before he finished the fight strongly to take the last three sessions with a mixture of good boxing, allied to solid punching.
