1989-04-29 John John Molina w pts 12 Juan Laporte, Roberto Clemente Coliseum, San Juan, Puerto Rico - WBO. Scorecards: 119-113, 118-111, 116-113. The inaugural championship fight at the weight for the WBO saw Molina (130) overcome Laporte (130) by a big margin after piling up the points with the left jab and working in combinations to head and body and one-twos. Although Laporte, the former WBC featherweight champion, landed some quality blows of his own he made the error of looking for clear openings rather than going on the attack and paid for the failing on the scorecards.

After Molina relinquished the WBO version of the title in September prior to becoming the IBF champion at the weight, Kamel Bou-Ali and Antonio Rivera were matched to find a successor.
