1989-04-29 Kenny Mitchell w pts 12 Julio Gervacio, Roberto Clemente Coliseum, San Juan, Puerto Rico - WBO. Referee: Roberto Ramirez. Scorecards: 116-115, 117-115, 117-113. The inaugural championship fight at the weight for the WBO saw Mitchell (122), his left eye pounded shut by the finish, dominate the middle rounds and score repeatedly with rights to the jaw before tiring later on. Gervacio (122), the better boxer of the two and possessing a longer reach, failed to impose himself until the last three rounds after hurting Mitchell in the tenth. Again he hurt Mitchell in the 11th before staggering him in the final session, but the American, calling up all his reserves, rallied to make it to the final bell.
