1989-05-06 Genaro Leon w rsc 1 Danny Garcia, The Stadium, Santa Ana, California, USA - WBO. Referee: John Thomas. Contesting the inaugural title, Leon (147) and Garcia (147) quickly got down to work, with both men giving and taking solid blows before the latter was floored by a big right hand. Back on his feet, Garcia looked shaky and another big right sent him down again, whereupon the referee dispensed with the count and stopped the fight with two seconds of the opening round remaining.

Leon relinquished the WBO version of the title in October in order to try for a crack at one of the other organisation’s crowns and Manning Galloway and Al Hamza (Veabro Boykin) were selected to meet up in order to find a new champion. Galloway was an experienced fighter who had been a pro since 1978 and had 41 wins from 53 contests, beating Al Long, Hamza, Rollin Williams and Said Skouma, while his opponent had 23 wins from 28 contests, but had beaten no one of note. Neither man was rated in The Ring magazine’s top ten.
