1989-05-13 Julio Cesar Chavez w rtd 10 Roger Mayweather, Great Western Forum, Los Angeles, California, USA - WBC. Referee: Harry Elespuru. Stepping up after winning titles at two different weights, and having beaten the champion back in 1985, Chavez (140) was fancied to win this fight, but Mayweather (138¾) did better than expected. Although Chavez’s two-handed punching, strength and pressure proved too much for Mayweather the latter managed to hit him with quite a few solid shots, but every time that happened he was repaid twice over. By the seventh Chavez was swarming all over Mayweather, who was then cut over the left eye in the eighth. Although he tried desperately to keep the Mexican at bay, with the strength draining from Mayweather after being punished at the end of the tenth he slumped on his stool following the bell and was retired by his corner. It had been a valiant stand by Mayweather, but after he was deducted two points for going low and holding earlier in the contest he was always up against it, doing well to get as far as he did against the relentless Chavez.
