1989-05-17 Carlos De Leon w rsc 9 Sammy Reeson, London Arena, Millwall, London, England - WBC. Referee: Arthur Mercante. In winning the title for a record fourth time, De Leon (189¾) proved to be too good for the former British and European champion, Reeson (189½), who had been waiting for this opportunity for some while and had been out of the ring for over a year. Cut around the right eye in the first round, Reeson already had his back to the wall and when a long vertical gash appeared over his right eye in the third his days were numbered. Although the wounds were being controlled by good corner work, Reeson was unable to bother De Leon too much apart from in the eighth when he got his southpaw jab working, and in the ninth after being dropped twice the fight was halted at 2.04 of the session. This was a vacant title fight that came about after Evander Holyfield stepped up to the heavyweight ranks.
