1989-06-16 Maurizio Stecca w rsc 9 Angel Mayor, Palatrussardi Arena, Milan, Italy - WBO. Referee: Stan Christodoulou. Making the first defence of his new title, Stecca cut Mayor on the left eye in the second round with a slashing right hook before coming under attack himself in the third and fourth sessions when powerful rights to the head shook him up. There was no doubt that Mayor created problems for Stecca, but once the latter got his boxing together he began to draw ahead, and in the ninth with the Venezuelan’s eye damage worsening the referee stopped the contest in favour of the champion. There were no protests from the challenger as the injury was worsening round by round, while Stecca acknowledged that Mayor had been the toughest fight of his career.
