1989-06-24 Jeff Harding w rsc 12 Dennis Andries, Convention Centre, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - WBC. Referee: Joe Cortez. Having taken a beating for much of the time, being dropped in the fifth, cut over both eyes and carrying a badly damaged nose, it was almost miraculous that Harding (174½) reached the 12th round let alone won the fight. Harding had even been a replacement for Donny Lalonde, who decided to retire a month earlier and at times must have wondered whether it had been a good idea to take the Canadian’s place. However, by the eighth Andries (175) was beginning to show signs of weariness and although managed to keep things together he suddenly ran out of gas in the 11th and was relieved to hear the bell. A spent force in the 12th, even though Harding picked up a badly cut right eye, Andries was floored twice before being rescued by the referee just 97 seconds from the final bell.
