1989-06-25 Charles Williams w rtd 10 Bobby Czyz, Convention Centre, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - IBF. Referee: Rudy Battle. Trying to reclaim his old title, Czyz (175) gave it his best shot but it was not enough as Williams (174½) took his best blows and continually hit back. Having taken the opening round and cut the champion over the right eye in the third, Czyz had his successes, but from thereon he was gradually being ground down. In the eighth round Czyz, his left eye badly damaged, was knocked down twice by powerful rights to the head before being saved by the bell when in a precarious position. Although Czyz was allowed to come out for the next two sessions, with Williams in full flight it was a hopeless task and at the end of the tenth with his left eye closed shut he was retired by his corner, despite the result being announced as a stoppage.
