1989-07-09 Edwin Rosario w rsc 6 Anthony Jones, Showboat Casino Hotel, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - WBA. Referee: Tony Orlando. After Julio Cesar Chavez had won the WBC junior welterweight championship in May, Rosario (135) and Jones (135) were selected to decide the vacant WBA lightweight title, and it was the latter who made the better start when taking the fight to the former champion. By the fourth, Jones had jumped into the lead and although he was not seen as a big puncher he was certainly shaking Rosario up with solid lefts and rights from his southpaw stance even before the latter had his gumshield knocked out in the second. Having outpunched Rosario again in the fourth Jones was looking to move on, but in the next session the former at last began to show as he picked up the pace. Although Jones started the sixth strongly, Rosario came back with some good punches of his own and immediately found a big right hand that dropped the American flat on his face. Getting up at ‘six’, the referee allowed Jones to resume boxing after the mandatory ‘eight’ had been reached, but after Rosario had landed another right and a couple of left hooks the third man rescued the former with a minute left on the clock.
