1989-09-16 Jorge Paez w co 2 Jose Mario Lopez, City Bullring, Mexico City, Mexico - IBF. Referee: Jesus Arias Torres. Walking right through his challenger, the colourful Paez (126) was just too strong and powerful and it quickly became apparent that this one was not going to last after Lopez (125¾) was clubbed to his knees before the bell to end the opening round saved him. Still unsteady in the second, Lopez tried to hang in, but was again dropped by a heavy right hand and counted out at 1.27 of the session, having failed to get to his feet in time.

Ranked at number nine by The Ring magazine, Lupe Gutierrez would be next for Paez. With 22 wins (17 inside the distance) from 24 fights, having beaten Hector Lizarraga and Jeff Franklin (twice), on paper the USBA champion appeared to be a stiff test for Paez.
