1989-11-05 Azumah Nelson w rsc 12 Jim McDonnell, Royal Albert Hall, Kensington, London, England - WBC. Referee: Joe Cortez. Having made a great start, McDonnell (129¾), moving in and out with the jab and smothering the champion’s work, was eventually caught in the fifth when a tremendous left hook deposited him for ‘nine’. There seemed to be no way back, but McDonnell tore into Nelson (130) to amaze the crowd and was still going strong in the ninth despite being being behind on the cards. Nelson, however, was merely biding his time and in the 11th, once McDonnell’s right eye closed tight he was at the mercy of the Ghanaian’s left hook. By now taking a battering, the challenger should have been retired at the end of that round, but he pushed himself out for the 12th and after falling down once and dropped twice the referee finally called it off on the 1.40 mark.
