1989-11-09 [[Simon Brown]] w pts 12 [[Luis Santana]], Civic Centre, Springfield, Massachusetts, USA - IBF. Referee: Matt Mullaney. Scorecards: 119-110, 120-108, 120-105. That he beat his challenger was no surprise, but being unable to put him down obviously rankled with Brown (146), who eventually had to settle for the points. There was never any doubt about Brown winning, but even though he hit Santanta (146) with his best punches, thudding left hooks and right hands to head and body, the tough Dominican never looked like going down and even made many of the rounds fairly competitive. By the sixth Santana was carrying a badly swollen left eye that bothered him for the rest of the contest, but even when virtually one-eyed he managed to keep going much to the chagrin of Brown.
