1989-12-11 Jesus Salud w disq 9 Juan Jose Estrada, Great Western Forum, Los Angeles, California, USA - WBA. Referee: Larry Rozadilla. Born in the Philippines and fighting out of Hawaii prior to moving to San Diego, the challenger was well ahead after the first eight rounds. He had floored Estrada (122) in the sixth and been awarded two points when dropped twice from low blows. Having given a tremendous display of skill, sharp punching and power to dominate, Salud (121¾) was well on the way to victory while Estrada had landed low blows throughout. When another low blow, this time in the ninth, sent Salud crashing in agony, the referee was left with no option other than to disqualify Estrada after 48 seconds of the round had elapsed.

After Salud forfeited the WBA version of the title in April 1990 for failing to defend against Luis Mendoza, the latter was matched against Ruben Dario Palacios in order to find a new champion.
