1989-12-16 [[Julio Cesar Chavez]] w co 3 [[Alberto Cortes]], Sports Palace, Mexico City, Mexico - WBC. Referee: Arthur Mercante. Straight into action from the opening bell, the champion swarmed all over the southpaw Cortes (139¾), pushing him back to the ropes, punching away with right hands through the middle, throwing hooks to the body and uppercuts from both hands. Unfortunately for Cortes he lacked the power to keep Chavez (140) at bay and although he threw plenty of leather himself the latter just shrugged it off. In the second, with Chavez pressing forward remorselessly, Cortes almost capsized under the hail of blows coming his way, and in the third it was no surprise when left uppercuts and rights to the head eventually dropped him to be counted out after 1.56 of the session had elapsed.
