1990-01-27 Lindell Holmes w pts 12 Frank Tate, Municipal Auditorium, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA - IBF. Referee: Lucien Jubert. Scorecards: 116-112, 119-112, 114-114. In a battle for the vacant title Holmes (168) got away well in the early rounds when outscoring Tate (166), who had a four-inch-reach advantage, while using his jab to set up the right hand and attacking both the head and body. Although Tate had not really impressed prior to the tenth he was not out of it and during the next two sessions he scored with several solid combinations before Holmes came back with good jabs and rights to the body to well deserve the points decision in his favour. A big underdog, Holmes had silenced his critics, and how one of the judges had both men on level terms at the final bell was surprising to say the least.
