1990-04-29 Nigel Benn w rsc 8 Doug DeWitt, Caesar’s Palace & Casino, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - WBO. Referee: Randy Neumann. With both men setting a tremendous pace and the champion being cut over the left eye in the first round it was all systems go before Benn (158) was dropped by a left hook towards the end of the second. It was certainly all action, Benn coming back strongly in the third to have DeWitt (160) over following a big right to the jaw. The next four rounds saw some heavy punches going in, but although both men were shaken on occasion there were no knockdowns. Having held himself back somewhat, Benn struck at the start of the eighth when smashing DeWitt to the canvas with a big left hook for a ‘nine’ count. Although the latter was given the go-ahead he was almost out on his feet when put down again. Up at the count of ‘two’ DeWitt was then dropped again by a left hook, and with just 44 seconds of the round gone the fight was concluded on the three knockdowns in a round ruling. Afterwards, Benn stated that despite damaging his left hand during the fight he had not let it stop him from using it.
