1990-07-29 Jeff Lampkin w co 8 Siza Makathini, Hilton Hotel, St Petersburg, Florida, USA - IBF. Referee: Bill Connors. Defending his title for the first time Lampkin (190) found Makathini (187) a tough customer to handle, and one who always tried to hit back, especially in the sixth and seventh when backing him up with solid combinations. There was not a great deal in it coming into the eighth, but after 2.04 of the session Makathini had been counted out after being set up by a right to the jaw followed by a crunching left hook to the body.

When Lampkin relinquished the IBF version of the title in July 1991 on signing with promoter, Don King, James Warring, the NABF champion, was matched against James Pritchard, the IBF Inter-Continental champion, to decide the vacancy.
